All kinds of elections in Slovakia should be governed in the future by a single law that the government approved at its Wednesday’s session. The law should replace six existing ones and it should bring on a number of changes. Political parties will be able to spend no more than 3 million euro for their election campaign. Campaign expenditures of presidential candidates are limited to €500,000 and independent candidates for county chairman will be allowed to throw into their campaign €250,000 maximally.
The law bans parties from campaigning at any times other than those specified and introduces a moratorium that will end campaigns 48 hours before every election. Finances spent on campaigns should be kept in separate public accounts that will be available for third parties to inspect at any time. The law moreover gives running candidates and parties the right to inspect the counted ballots. And in the case of a referendum, people will now have the possibility to vote via post. If passed in Parliament, the law will come into effect as of next year.
