Ministry Proposes Plan to Deal with Illegal Constructions in Roma Settlements

The Transport, Construction and Regional Development Ministry has a plan of how to deal with illegal buildings in Roma settlements. With the help of representatives of Roma communities they will first of all create a list of all Roma settlements and land with illegal buildings. This should give the ministry detailed information about the number, area and owners of the land in question.

The land should then be transferred into state or municipality ownership, with the original owners receiving compensation for it. Then, this land would be incorporated into village land plans, which is directly connected to the creation of regional-planning documentation subsidised by the ministry. This new construction law should take effect in July 2014 in line with the transition period needed for removing illegal buildings.
