The numbers of chamois (a goat-like antelope) on the Slovak and Polish sides of the High Tatra Mountains will be counted, on Wednesday, June 17. The spring chamois count is part of the animal's protection programme. The administration of the High Tatras natural park focuses on protecting the critically endangered Tatra chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica) as a rare indigenous chamois sub-species. Measures are in place to tackle negative phenomena such as poaching, disturbing the animals and unauthorised activities in chamois and marmot habitats. A total of 1,232 chamois were found in the High Tatras in last year's count, with 844 of them located on the Slovak side.
