Activists demand return of Slovak territories to Hungary

Hungarian far-right activists protested the Treaty of Trianon over the weekend, which defined the current border between Hungary and Slovakia. Around a thousand activists from the nationalist political party Jobbik marched through the streets of Budapest to the Slovak embassy, shouting hateful comments and demanding the return of Slovak territories to Hungary. The young extremists from the Sixty-Four Counties Youth Movement and from far-right Jobbik shouted extremist remarks, including "Down with Trianon" and "We hate you, Slovakia". Jobbik is the second strongest party in the Hungarian parliament, and its popularity is on the rise. Slovakia's response has been moderate. "The event did not bring anything new, when compared to the past. The composition of attendants was similar - radicals, who avow to extremist groups", said Slovak Foreign Ministry spokesman Peter Stano. Slovak National Party (SNS) vice-chairman Anton Hrnko condemned the march, explaining it as the result of long-term Hungarian Government policies. "Stupid insults and the reviling of our country and nation certainly don't contribute towards good neighbourly relations between our nations, even more so when this is done by young people", said Hrnko. He added that every country has extremists who don't realise what they are doing.
