Košice has been named the European Capital of Sport for 2016 by the European Capitals of Sport Association (ACES Europe). Slovakia's second largest city has thereby been awarded another prestigious title after holding the title European Capital of Culture 2013. The city wants to invest more in infrastructure, repair school sports facilities and build new modern facilities that will serve both professional athletes and the general public. The main sporting events in Košice in 2016 will include the International Peace Marathon, several urban runs, a swimming relay contest, the Košice-Tatry-Košice cycle race, the dance sport world championships, the Basketball Euroleague, Volleyball World League and Water Polo World League.
