Slovaks don’t want immigrants, says political commentator

There isn't a single relevant political party in Slovakia that would support joining the plan of European solidarity concerning the relocation of refugees from Greece and Italy to EU countries that aren't subject to the pressure of immigration at the moment, said notable political commentator Juraj Hrabko on TABLET.TV on Saturday, June 6. "We're xenophobic. It isn't just the attitude of Prime Minister Robert Fico and [Siet party leader] Radoslav Prochazka, but it's the opinion of most of the relevant parties in Slovakia", said Hrabko. He added that the public opinion in Slovakia is not favourably inclined towards immigrants, and politicians less than one year before the election are saying what the public wants to hear. On the other hand, the reluctance to help people who often come from war zones and are on the verge of despair isn't right and it isn't Christian either, believes Hrabko. Coincidently, on RTVS' show Sobotné dialógy (Saturday dialogues) Slovak Members of European Parliament Anna Záborská (Christian Democrats) and Boris Zala (Smer-SD) announced that Slovakia could indeed manage to accommodate 785 refugees over the next two years; mostly Syrians and Africans currently staying in Italy and Greece.
