The alleged war criminal László Csatáry accused of participating in the deportation of thousands of Slovak Jews during WWII has died at the age of 99 in a hospital in Budapest. The internet-based service Budapest Report broke the news on Monday, claiming that Csatáry had been hospitalised for pneumonia. At that time there was an ongoing trial again Csatáry in Slovakia.
He was in charge of the Košice ghetto between May 15th and June 2nd, 1944 when almost 15,000 local Jews were transported to Auschwitz. Allegedly he tortured, executed, and deported some individuals himself. The Czechoslovak court sentenced Csatáry in absence after the war. A new trial was supposed to continue in September.
