Minimum Wage Rise Might Endanger Jobs in Some Sectors

According to UniCredit Bank analysis, a proposed rise in the minimum wage may be 'a double-edged sword'. "A minimum wage that is too high may directly endanger jobs with low added value, as the value that employees create in such positions are close to or even lower than expenditure incurred towards their wages," said the author of the analysis Lubomir Korsnak.

According to him sectors with the lowest labour productivity, that is those that face the greatest deal of risk when it comes to a minimum wage rise, include tourism, textile industry and activities such as security services, cleaning services and call centres, said Korsnak. When it comes to central and Eastern Europe, Slovakia has the fourth highest minimum wage, after Slovenia, Croatia and Poland. The country's labor productivity is the second highest in the region. The minimum wage is currently set at €337.70.
