More than 4,300 prisoners worked on daily basis last year

A little over 67 percent of convicts and those remanded in custody in Slovak jails who are eligible to take up a job actually carried out work in 2014, head of the Justice and Prison Guards Department (ZVJS) General Director's Office Adrian Baláž told TASR on Tuesday. Baláž specified that out of the total of 10,099 convicts and people remanded in custody, 6,419 prisoners were eligible to take up a job. Of the latter number, a total of 4,287 people remanded in custody and 40 convicts actually carried out jobs on a daily basis last year. The average remuneration in facilities inside prisons totalled €152.67 per month, while the figure was €87.75 per month at external sites. "The creation of new jobs for people convicted of crimes will always be problematic considering their low qualifications and the lack of working habits, and due to the conditions on the labour market. ZVJS aims to obtain commissions for easier work involving assembly, completion and production within correction facilities", said Baláž, adding that most people in custody are interested in taking up work.
