Over half of the 1,641 complaints made by patients and relatives last year to the Health Care Supervisory Office concerned dissatisfaction with the approach to treatment. This was followed by complaints related to patient deaths of 21.8 percent. In most cases the office decided that the complaints were unfounded, however, surgeons made 31 officially recorded mistakes in 2014, which was the highest number recorded. Fines totalling €190,300 were handed out for 108 recorded errors.
President of the Private Doctors Association Ladislav Pasztor stated that doctors make mistakes just like everybody else and that this is often due to an excessive workload. President of the Patients Rights Association Katarina Kafková, a doctor herself, objected to this statement, however, stressing that doctors have much bigger responsibilities than people in other professions.
