European Parliament has restricted the usage of plastic carrier bags. The new directive makes it possible for EU member states to choose one of two alternatives. They can either accept the measures for decreasing the average annual use of non-biodegradable plastic carrier bags to 90 pieces per capita by the end of 2019 and 40 pieces by 2025. Or the other option is to start paying for plastic carrier bags by the end of 2018. According to European MP Ivan Štefanec it is inevitable that Slovakia will reduce the use of plastic carrier bags. "The consumption of these bags in the Slovak Republic represents 466 pieces per capita per year," he added.
