Yesterday saw record temperatures in Bratislava measured at 39.2 degrees Celsius. Other areas were also affected. For instance Prievidza measured 37 degrees. Previously, the highest recorded was that of 39 degrees in July 2007. Pavel Faško of the Slovak Meteorological Institute said this could be repeated within the next few days. Scores of elderly people have been taken to hospital for treatment after collapsing from heatstroke. Doctors have warned vulnerable people, especially the elderly, young and pregnant women to avoid exposure to the sun from 11 to 3 o’clock, to stay in the shade and drink plenty of non-sugary fluids.
