The European Commission announced on Wednesday 22 April that EU member states will be given the right to ban the usage of imported genetically modified organism (GMO) in the form of food products or animal feed even if those had already been approved on a European level. "The Commission heard the fears of many EU citizens" stated EU Commissioner for Food safety Vytenis Andriukaitis. Currently 58 genetically modified products, mainly food for animals, are permitted in the EU. Another 58 GMO grains are waiting for their approval.
