Big scandals shouldn't be swept under rug, says President

Large scandals that resonate across society shouldn't be swept under the carpet. If they can't be investigated, then that should be stated openly, President Andrej Kiska told Prosecutor-General Jaromír Čižnár during his first ever visit in office to the Prosecutor-General's Office (PG) on Tuesday. On Tuesday, Kiska met with Čižnár and all his secretaries, including Special Prosecutor Dušan Kováčik. After the meeting, Kiska told media that they discussed the popular public perception that some over-privileged people always stand above the law in Slovakia and none of the big-time scandals have ever been properly investigated. "It would be a lot fairer and more proper to say flat out that some cases cannot be investigated, if that's the case, and state the reason. This is mostly due the need to rectify the situation and prevent these things from reoccurring", said Kiska. Kiska added that he also discussed with Čižnár and his colleagues the current cases of the bankrupt construction firm Váhostav-SK and the high profile Gorilla corruption case, neither of which have been resolved. According to the head of state, the PG Office is taking "very intense action" including a police raid which took this morning on the firm's offices in Žilina. The President also heaped praise on Čižnár. "Within my short time in the office, I've come to know Mr. Prosecutor-General as a person who truly cares about justice".
