Thousands of Slovaks unable to study in their mother tongue

Around 26,000 Slovak pupils living in the ethnically mixed area of southern Slovakia don't have the opportunity to study in their mother tongue, but only in the minority language. This statement was issued by Marián Tkáč, head of Matica Slovenská, the cultural institution concentrating on the issues of Slovak nation. Tkáč stressed the fact that Slovak primary schools are being closed down in the ethnically mixed areas, where they often serve as the only cultural centre in the surrounding area, which is using state language. Matica Slovenská therefore asks state institutions to act regarding this problem.
