150 fully-automated speed cameras are expected to be in operation by 2017 with a pilot project to be rolled out within two years according to the Slovak Interior Ministry. Previously such systems had been held back due to the requirement to identify the driver of the vehicle, and all fines having to be entered in manually, however in 2012 legislation changed allowing the owner of the vehicle to be fined regardless of who was behind the wheel at the time.
The new system would record and decipher the license plate of a speeding vehicle and despatch a fine automatically without human interaction. Such systems are already in place in the neighbouring Czech Republic and Austria. The units are expected to be placed in areas with high rates of speeding drivers.
