Černák confesses to murder of erstwhile Košice kingpin Holub

Mikuláš Černák, who is serving a lifetime sentence after being convicted of multiple murders, has now confessed to the murder of erstwhile Košice underworld boss Robert Holub in 1997.
According to the police investigator, Holub first faced a murder attempt at a petrol station in Kosice in the 1990s, but the hitman missed his target. Second time round, Holub was lured to the Danube Hotel in Bratislava, but unlike his bodyguard, Holub survived the attack, albeit sustaining serious gunshot wounds. He was shot dead while recovering from his injuries in Bratislava's hospital in the borough of Kramáre. It was reported last month that Černák, who was considered to be one of the most powerful figures in the Slovak underworld in the 1990s, may be released from prison in eight years. Černák was sentenced in 1997 for blackmail and was released after serving out his sentence in 2006. One year later, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for six murders and organising a further murder. According to the Penal Code, a person sentenced to life imprisonment can be released on parole after serving a total of at least 25 years in prison. So Černák can apply to be released in 2023. "I've been in prison for 18 years, and for 16.5 years I hadn't testified against anybody. I'm brought before courts every four years in order to refute the lies of third-rate gangsters. I'm sick and tired of this, so I told myself that I'd speak out. I'm ashamed of my dark past, and I'll provide my testimony", said Černák, adding that he's ready to cooperate with the authorities in shedding light on as many as 32 murders.
