Slovak Orthodox believers celebrate Easter

About 50 thousand Orthodox Church followers living in Slovakia have started their Easter celebrations. The strict Lent season culminates on Friday. There are so-called Ceasarian hours taken with "večereň", an evening prayer when the "plaštenica" is displayed, i.e. an icon depicting the dead body of Jesus Christ. The believers will celebrate the resurrection of Christ on Saturday midnight. After that, they will bless pascha, an Easter bread-like cake. Sunday is dedicated to liturgies and Monday to the tradition of splashing water. As to the number of Orthodox believers, the largest parishes are Svidník, Bardejov, Košice, Prešov, Medzilaborce, Snina, Michalovce and Humenné, in the east of Slovakia.
