International Roma Day observed

The message from International Roma Day (April 8) can motivate positive changes in Roma settlements, said Peter Pollák, Government proxy for Roma communities, on Tuesday. "I wish to see the Roma people be proud of their origin and to keep traditional values in their families, such as respect for the elders, love for children and unity in the family", said Pollák, noting that as early as this year his office will carry out steps in implementing systemic changes in education and the establishment of temporary housing for people in need. Pollák reiterated his belief that investment in education of Roma will help to lessen their dependence on the social welfare system. "This investment will pay off ... even in the next generation", he declared. International Roma Day is, according to Pollák, dedicated not only to the Roma population but also to all those who help to promote pro-Roma initiatives - and initiatives that help the country as a whole.
