The Slovak Interior Ministry has drawn up new legislation designed to prevent drivers from parking on pavements. This was reported in a Tuesday story from the Pravda daily. At present, drivers who park their cars on pavements must leave at least 1.5 metres of free space for pedestrians. However many motorists do not or are unable to do this, creating problems for the elderly and people with and prams. According to the new legislation, parking on pavements would be allowed only in exceptional circumstances, while motorbikes and bicycles would be exempt. It doesn't appear that the new regulations will come into force until 2019, however, because local councils will need time to provide alternative parking spaces. The new legislation has already been prepared and is now set to be submitted for comments by other ministries.
