Minister assumes to close down Goethe University

Education Minister Juraj Draxler indicated winnowing out universities in Slovakia after assuming his ministerial position in November. On Thursday, he pointed his finger at the first university to be closed down this year, the Hospodárske Noviny daily reported. Goethe University in Bratislava will probably close down by the end of this year the minister told the daily. While the school is focused on education in German language, it appears to have a lack of study courses in German, which may lead to its closure. Goethe University chancellor Ľubomír Šlahor, when asked by the daily about the Education Ministry's plans to close his university, said that he was hearing the piece of information for the first time. "The minister obviously sees too far ahead", said Šlahor, adding that the school is currently only preparing documents for the accreditation commission, which should decide whether it will propose the minister to approve the accreditation of individual courses or not.
