All mountains in Slovakia are at an increased risk of avalanche following recent snowfall which has been unevenly distributed due to strong wind gusts. In many places, the slopes are too dangerous for skiing and snowboarding due to snow pillows. These risks are increased due to warmer temperatures affecting the ridges, ranging from between -7° C to 1° C, warns the Centre for Avalanche Prevention, located in Jasná (central Slovakia). The surface layer of snow which fell on most mountains over the last few days was mostly a fine dusty layer which becomes wet during the day, with all mountains in Slovakia remaining at Level 3 of the 5-level international avalanche scale. The new snow primarily fell on eastern and south-eastern slopes where snow pillows have formed. Avalanches are more likely to occur on slopes with an inclination of 30 ° or greater and the risk increases throughout the day as temperatures rise.
