Referendum on family results not valid due to low turnout

The referendum on preserving the traditional family in Slovakia, which took place on Saturday, is invalid. The turnout reached only 21.41 percent, while the attendance of more than half of the country's registered voters was required for its validity. According to political analyst Michal Horský the low turnout was surprising. "It really was expected that such a massive campaign and such emotional strain would make a third of the voters come to the polls. This didn't happen, though", commented Horský. The referendum featured three questions: the status of marriage as a unique bond between a man and a woman was backed by 94.50 percent; rejecting the right of same-sex couples to adopt and raise children was supported by 92.43 percent; and the right of parents to decide whether or not their children should attend classes dealing with sex education and euthanasia was backed by 90.32 percent.
