Work is continuing on the removal of a type of tar oil in the Bratislava borough of Devínska Nová Ves, with a visible progress becoming apparent after almost four weeks of activity. In 1963 a disused quarry at the site was selected by government officials as a suitable location for the dumping of around eighteen thousand cubic metres of waste oil; a by-product leftover from the Apollo oil refinery, which was destroyed during the second world war. Research has shown that the substance is actively leaking into the surrounding soil, prompting its removal before it enters waterways. Special containment trucks are being used to carry the waste, with the transporters stating that moving the substance through the populated area does not endanger the health of the population. Works are expected to continue until the end of April, 2015.
