Defence Minister Martin Glváč (Smer-SD) on Thursday presented Slovakia's armed forces with new transport equipment and special technology in the form of 55 vehicles. Commander of land forces Ondrej Novosad was given the keys to 28 British Land Rover Defender off-road vehicles, 12 N2G Aktis off-road vehicles made in Slovakia and 15 Czech Tatra 815 off-road vehicles. The package will be completed in February, when another 42 Land Rovers will be delivered. Glváč explained that the new vehicles represent a step forward in meeting his promise of two years ago to modernise the army. The defence minister emphasised that the new vehicles that will carry both people and materials will replace decades-old UAZ 469, PV3S and Tatra 148 vehicles. Glváč's ambition is to get rid of all outdated technology gradually, and the replacement drive should continue next year as well. The vehicles were purchased according to requirements stemming from military training, clarified Glváč. General Novosad noted that the technology will considerably help Slovakia's land forces to meet their obligation to defend the state.
