New airline to set up base in Košice

The low-cost airline Wizz Air is to open a new operational base at Košice airport that should result in 30 new jobs and two regular routes, Wizz Air and the Košice airport announced on Wednesday. The new routes from the airport - to Milan-Bergamo and Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster Sheffield - are set to be launched in September. There should be two flights per week on each route. In all, the Budapest-based Wizz Air should then provide 11 flights from the airport on a weekly basis. "We began to operate here a year and a half ago, and we've already handled over 130,000 travellers. Slovakia is the 12th country where we'll set up a base", said Wizz Air CEO and Chairman Jozsef Varadi. The airport's board chairman and CEO Karl Dandler said that the fact that Wizz Air will have an Airbus A320 in Košice attests to the airline's satisfaction with the services and trust that it has in the city and the entire region. He added that they're working in conjunction with local partners on connecting Košice with an airport in Germany post haste. Both Košice mayor Richard Raši and Košice regional governor Zdenko Trebuľa embraced the addition of two new routes from the airport. Wizz Air has been operating a regular service between Košice and London since September 2013.
