A total of 217 people sought medical assistance at one of the five facilities coming under Bratislava University Hospital (UNB) on New Year's Eve, said UNB spokesperson Petra Stano Maťašovská. While most of the people concerned came to casualty with cuts and fractured bones, 15 people suffered wounds due to accidents with fireworks. Five of them had to have fingers amputated. Physicians at UNB facilities had to attend to urgent psychological problems in six cases, and one attempted suicide. "Compared with the previous New Year's Eve, the overall number of patients rose from 170 to 217, with the number of those injured by explosives increasing from nine to 15," said the UNB spokesperson. According to the statistics of the Slovak Health Rescue Service Operations Centre, paramedics throughout the country had to be dispatched to 99 intoxicated patients, 50 patients injured by fireworks and eight patients with hypothermia.
