Bratislava firefighters were despatched to Apollo Bridge to put out a fire that erupted in the engine compartment of a public transport bus on Tuesday. According to the Operations Centre of the Bratislava Firefighter and Emergency Corps Directorate, nine firefighters with two fire engines were called to action. The fire erupted in the rear section of Ikarus bus, said Bratislava Public Transport spokesperson Adriana Volfová. "The driver had the presence of mind to ensure safe disembarkment of passengers before then localising the fire", she claimed, adding that he managed to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher before the arrival of firefighters. No injuries were reported. "The firefighters only had to help the driver of the bus, who felt sick to his stomach, most likely after breathing in the smoke", said Health Emergency Service Operations Centre spokesman Boris Chmel, who added that the driver was not completely overcome by the fumes. Other bus links operated without delays across the bridge.
