Slovakia proposes to change Europe’s gas map

Slovak gas transport company Eustream wants to change Europe's gas map profoundly. It presented a new gas pipeline project Eastring, which aspires to be an alternative to the Russian project South Stream. Eastring should connect existing gas pipelines in Slovakia, Ukraine, and Romania through a new 570-km-long pipe that would secure gas supplies to the Balkans from Western Europe. "Economically and strategically, this is the best solution for this part of Europe," said in an interview for Reuters Eustream's chief Tomáš Mareček. The new pipeline would not have to build under the sea; moreover the project cost was estimated by Mareček at 750 million euro, which is 20 times less than the estimated cost of the South Stream project.
