Members of the Slovak unit deployed in Kandahar will stay in Afghanistan until the end of 2014 when the ISAF operation ends. Even the attack on a Slovak contingent in Afghanistan on Tuesday (July 9) in which one soldier was killed and another six suffered injuries won't change the Government's stance towards combating terrorism and the participation of our troops in the ISAF mission, Prime Minister Robert Fico said in Kandahar on Wednesday.
“The Slovak Government will continue striving to eliminate terrorism in co-operation with other countries, as it considers terrorism to be an unacceptable way of resolving political issues," asserted Fico during his visit to the military base in Kandahar where the incident took place.
One of the two seriously wounded Slovak soldiers was shot in the head and will to be transported back to Slovakia. Defence Minister Martin Glváč, who accompanies Fico in Afghanistan, said that the man in question will be transferred via a Czech military aircraft with all necessary medical equipment - most probably as early as on Wednesday night. The four soldiers who suffered only light injuries will remain in Afghanistan.
