Residents who had complained about cars being stolen in the suburb of Lunik IX in the Eastern Slovak city of Košice lobbied the local council to erect a two metre high wall around the parking lot in an effort to eliminate car thefts reportedly carried out by Roma citizens.
The head of the mayor's office Marian Krajňák says the repeated thefts and damage to cars is the primary reason why local councillors approved the €4700 wall surrounding the parking lot and running between two multi-storey apartment blocks. However, despite the nature of the wall the ethnicity of the vandals and thieves remains unproven. “The police does not provide statistics on the offenders according to their ethnicity,” informed the Košice police spokesperson Alexander Szabo.
