Driver Distracted by Canine Passenger; Hits Train

A motorist and her dog escaped with only minor injuries yesterday after losing control and colliding with a train near Komárovce, in Eastern Slovakia. The 53 year old driver from Kosice was approaching a railway crossing when her dog jumped from the back seat to the front, startling the driver, who pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, sending the car into the side of an incoming train.

The impact propelled the vehicle back onto the road, sustaining heavy damage, and the driver was transferred to hospital for observation with only minor injuries. “She was startled by her dog which moved freely around the back seat. Suddenly it jumped onto the woman; she flinched and pressed the gas instead of the brake pedal. She then broke through the lowered barrier and slammed into a moving train,” Said police spokesman Alexander Szabo. Damage to both the car and the train has been estimated at €44,500 with police continuing their investigation.
