Close friends, mountain rescuers, acquaintances, as well as representatives of the Interior Ministry, altogether more than 1,000 people gathered to pay their last respects to the mountain climber and volunteer rescuer Anton Dobes. Dobes and his mountain climber colleague Peter Sperka were was murdered on June 23 in Pakistan at a mountaineering base camp at the foot of Mt. Nanga Parbat in northern Pakistan in a Taliban attack, supposedly as payback for the death of one of the organisation's leaders during a U.S. drone attack.
Attending the funeral was also Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák who underlined that this is “the first time that Slovakia has been confronted with civilian victims of terrorism, which shows that terrorism concerns us as well. Thus we see the deployment of our soldiers in the fight against terrorism in Iraq or Afghanistan in a different light and we see why Slovakia needs to continue with the fight,” Minister Kaliňák added. Families of the two deceased mountaineers will receive €33,000 each from the Slovak Government, as the Cabinet approved it on Wednesday.
