The United Nations is concerned with fact that people of the Roma ethnic minority are still discriminated against and segregated in Slovakia and that same-sex couples are not legally recognised. The economical, social and cultural committee of the UN therefore advises to take measures to rectify this situation. In reaction to this, the Roma plenipotentiary in Slovakia claims they are preparing a pan Slovak strategy on the protection and support of human rights in Slovakia as well as the strategy for integration of the Roma valid until 2020, which should address the topics of discrimination and human rights protection.
In regards to the same sex partnerships, the Slovak Interior Ministry claims that the Slovak law forbids discrimination based on any grounds and that the newly established LGBT committee creates a new platform for a public as well as expert discussion on securing the rights of LGBT people. The UN also pointed to the male and female salary differences, sexual harassment within workplaces, domestic violence, and the ongoing exploitation of women and girls.
