The European Union (EU) will allocate €300 million for tackling Roma issues in Slovakia during the next budgetary period of 2014-20, SME daily reports. This is only half as much as in the 2007-13 periods. The Government Proxy for the Roma Communities Peter Pollák observed that Slovakia needs €700-800 million to be able to improve life for the Roma, however.
Pollak also conceded in this respect that there are numerous shortcomings in the system of drawing European money. He noted that the drawing of subsidies should be governed by stricter rules during the upcoming budgetary period. The proxy revealed that the money will be used for building road infrastructure, community centers, nursery and primary schools, and for building new flats for the Roma.
