Between 10-12 percent of Slovak adults have a problem with alcohol and cannot stop drinking, claims psychologist of the Comenius University Anton Heretik. According to him, alcohol consumption has a serious impact on their physical and mental health. Moreover, the World Health Organisation (WHO) found in their recent survey that an average Slovak would drink approximately 13 litres of pure alcohol last year.
On the other hand data of the Slovak Statistics Office show that alcohol consumption in Slovakia has been falling, however only a little over 14 percent of Slovaks abstain totally from drinking alcohol. Following recommendation of the WHO, the Slovak Government adopted two National Action Plans which are to reduce the negative effects of alcohol consumption.
