With a population of over 5 million, Slovakia saw a total of 571 suicides and another 1,018 attempted suicides in 2012, according to National Centre for Medical Information (NCZI) spokesman Peter Bubla. "The number of suicides rose year-on-year by 34 cases and 12 unsuccessful attempts in 2012. Overall, 451 suicide attempts were evaluated only as demonstrative, with an aim to achieve attention, advantage and the like “said Bubla.
The findings in this report suggest that the most prolific method of committing a suicide in Slovakia is hanging. The highest number of people who wanted to end their lives was recorded in the Banská Bystrica region, whereas the lowest number was seen in the Nitra region.
The report did not look at the primary reasons behind suicides.
