Slovakia will continue to provide temporary shelter for refugees heading onward to third countries. A maximum of 150 at a time will be allowed to stay for a maximum of half a year in a facility for migrants in Humenne, Eastern Slovakia. This stems from an agreement on humanitarian transfers, which the Cabinet approved on Wednesday. It will be valid for fifteen months.
Humanitarian transfers concern people who are exposed to the threat of deportation or in need of international protection until they move to their country of destination. Slovakia’s Migration Office provides services for these refugees such as housing, food and basic toiletries. Health and social care is provided by the UNHCR. Since 2009, Slovakia has received 369 people within this program, among those were 147 children. Most refugees came from Afghanistan, Somalia, and Palestine.
