Robert Fico calls for tighter controls on foreign workers

Prime Minister Robert Fico says Slovakia must avoid the problems he associates with uncontrolled and illegal migration in Western Europe. He made the remarks after meeting representatives of the Interior Ministry, foreign police and labour authorities to discuss the employment of workers from non-EU countries.

Fico acknowledged that Slovak employers are struggling to fill more than 130,000 vacancies, despite unemployment standing at around four percent. However, he stressed that labour market needs must not take priority over public safety.

The meeting agreed on preparing further measures, including possible limits on the number of temporary workers from selected third countries, more staff for the foreign police and stronger efforts to employ people who have been out of work for a long time.
