Reduced fares on public-service passenger rail services, regional bus services and public city transport in regional capital cities will remain in place until the end of November this year, with the government making the decision at its session on Wednesday.
The government reacted in this way to the persistent unfavourable trend in fuel prices in Slovakia. A 50-percent reduction in fares for second-class rail travel was initially introduced from 1 October for a period of 30 days, while half-price fares for bus travel were introduced from 12 October also for 30 days. According to the Transport Ministry, which proposed the extension, these measures have proved effective.
The Finance Ministry will allocate €5.3 million for the Transport Ministry to extend the reduced rail fares. Furthermore, it will release more than €8.5 million for regional authorities and regional cities to subsidise bus services.
