Wednesday marks the 108th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia on 28 October 1918. For Slovaks, the creation of the common state marked a historic turning point, establishing them as a state-forming nation. To mark the anniversary, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) and his Czech counterpart Andrej Babiš unveiled a monument symbolising Slovak-Czech friendship in Prague on Tuesday. Both leaders highlighted the importance of strong bilateral relations, welcoming the restoration of joint government meetings and renewed cooperation within the Visegrad Four. The bronze sculpture, depicting the two countries shaking hands, was donated by the Slovak Embassy. In Slovakia, October 28 has been a national holiday since 2020, although it is not a day off work.
