President Seeks Court Ruling on Ministerial Appointment

President Peter Pellegrini will ask the Constitutional Court to clarify his powers when appointing government ministers. He announced that he will not appoint Filip Kuffa (SNS) as Environment Minister until the court issues its ruling. Pellegrini cited concerns over police investigations into suspected criminal activities within the ministry’s organisations, arguing that the president should have the right to assess ministerial nominees. If the court rules that he has no such authority, Pellegrini says he will appoint Kuffa. Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) continues to support Kuffa’s nomination but may propose another candidate. In the meantime, Fico remains temporarily in charge of the Environment Ministry.
