Slovakia’s Armed Forces are set to take over the protection of the country’s airspace using their own F-16 fighter jets in the coming days, President Peter Pellegrini announced on Tuesday. Until now, Slovakia’s airspace has been protected by NATO allies following the grounding of its MiG-29 jets. The president also welcomed the modernisation of the military, including new air defence systems and growing numbers of professional soldiers. He expressed support for reopening the Javorina military training area, despite opposition from some local residents and politicians.
