Filip Kuffa Will Not Be Environment Minister

President Peter Pellegrini has so far refused to appoint the SNS nominee, Filip Kuffa, as Minister of the Environment. The SNS is insisting on this nomination. The opposition is demanding that Filip Kuffa also resign from his position as Deputy Minister. At the same time, President signed the appointment of Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová as Vice-Premier.

"It has been confirmed to me—including yesterday by representatives of the Police Force—that, following information reported in the media and suspicions that have been raised, criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding the suspected commission of several criminal offenses," the President stated on Wednesday. He cited examples such as the manipulation of public procurement and auctions, breach of duty in the administration of another's property, money laundering, and abuse of public office.

The Head of State added that, while respecting the presumption of innocence, he pointed to the fact that the police are conducting criminal proceedings; he noted that the potential filing of charges against the State Secretary would send a negative signal.
