The Slovak University of Agriculture (SPU) in Nitra has retained its position as the highest-ranked Slovak university in the field of sustainability in the latest edition of the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2026. It ranked 162nd overall in the global rankings.
According to the SPU management, this ranking is all the more valuable given that competition in the rankings has increased year on year. While 1,745 universities were assessed in 2025, this figure rose to 2,016 in 2026. In the global ranking, SPU moved up from 174th to 162nd place, achieving a total score of 8,425 points.
"The university has thus confirmed its long-term commitment to the systematic development of a sustainable campus, the responsible use of resources, the promotion of environmentally-focused education, and the integration of sustainability with research, digitisation and university management," said rector of SPU in Nitra Klaudia Halaszova.
According to her, the UI GreenMetric ranks among the most significant international assessments focusing on the sustainability of higher education institutions. It examines the environmental, operational, educational and governance aspects of university operations. The current 17th edition of the ranking focused on the development of sustainable campuses through management, digitisation and integrated performance assessment.
