Slovakia’s Senior Population Continues To Grow

More than one million people aged 65 and over lived in Slovakia last year, accounting for 19 percent of the population, according to the Slovak Statistical Office. Meanwhile, nearly 90-thousand people in Slovakia were aged 85 or older, twice as many as in 1996.

The number of seniors has been steadily increasing for decades, driven by longer life expectancy and declining birth rates. Women made up 59 percent of the country’s senior population, with around 190-thousand more women than men aged 65 and over.

The data also show that older people remain active in many areas of life. More than 830 seniors married last year, while over 440 divorced. Many also continued working alongside receiving their pensions. The average old-age pension reached 703 euros a month at the end of 2025, up three percent year-on-year.
