A significant number of Slovak pupils struggle to understand texts and see the practical value of learning mathematics. That’s according to results from the FinQ financial literacy programme, which assessed more than 42-thousand primary and secondary school pupils during the 2025–2026 school year.
The programme’s co-author, Darina De Jaegher, said weaknesses in language and maths skills also affect pupils’ ability to understand financial matters. However, she stressed that targeted teaching can make a difference. With the right support, pupils can reach the OECD average in financial literacy within three years.
