Slovakia and the other Visegrad Four (V4) countries — the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland — have succeeded in securing their demands at the European Union (EU) summit in Brussels, Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) said on Friday. The group focused on high electricity prices and a review of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS).
Fico added that EU member states had yet to reach an agreement on the bloc’s long-term budget for 2028–2034. He also ruled out Slovakia’s participation in a further €70 billion loan for Ukraine for 2027.
According to the prime minister, Slovakia wants to support Ukraine through other means, including projects in education, road infrastructure and energy interconnections.
Fico praised cooperation among the V4 countries, adding that Italy had also joined their efforts and played an important role in negotiations on energy prices.
