Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) voiced his support for former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić at an election rally in Novi Sad on Friday, delivering his speech in Serbian, TASR reported, citing the Serbian news website Danas.rs.
Vučić, who is seeking to become prime minister in the snap election scheduled for October 25, praised Fico’s speech and thanked him for “wanting to be in Novi Sad more than in Brussels”. Fico left a European Council meeting in Brussels early to travel to Serbia.
Addressing thousands of people gathered at Freedom Square in Novi Sad, Fico rejected foreign interference in Serbia’s elections and highlighted the country’s economic achievements. He also reiterated that Slovakia would never recognise Kosovo’s independence and would fully respect Serbia’s sovereignty.
The Slovak prime minister praised the good relations and equal rights enjoyed by the Slovak minority in Serbia’s Vojvodina region. He thanked the Serbian public and Vučić for their continued interest in the Slovak community, adding that a new Slovak House would soon open thanks to the Serbian authorities’ willingness to cooperate.
Concluding his speech, Fico reaffirmed Slovakia’s diplomatic position and called on people to preserve peace, stability and continuity of progress amid international uncertainty.
