Parliament Continues Debate on 2027 Budget

Slovak lawmakers are continuing their fifth day of debate on the government’s proposed state budget for 2027. The plan forecasts public spending of 70.8 billion euros and revenue of 63.3 billion, leaving a deficit of nearly 7.5 billion euros, or 4.94 percent of GDP.

Opposition MPs criticised the budget on Monday, warning it would increase public debt. MP Gábor Grendel (Slovensko) even called it an election-year measure and “a last desperate attempt to buy voters”. Opposition parties have also challenged the proposal at the Constitutional Court, arguing it fails to ensure fiscal stability and may breach budgetary responsibility rules. They also criticised the lack of time given to social partners to review the plan.

Prime Minister Robert Fico (SMER-SD) has urged lawmakers to approve the budget, describing it as essential for Slovakia’s security and stability amid growing international uncertainty. He warned that without an approved budget, the country could struggle to respond to future crises.

Parliament is due to debate the proposal until eight p.m. on Tuesday, with a vote expected on Wednesday if the debate concludes.
